Oliver Glasner ‘more likely’ to sign Crystal Palace extension after Man United twist

Oliver Glasner is considered more likely to sign a new Crystal Palace contract than be the next Man United manager.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the 51-year-old remains a strong contender but is not the only one on their list.

This comes after Brown told Football Insider that Man United are having second thoughts about Glasner as a result of their downturn in performances.

While the boss is considered unlikely to renew his contract at Crystal Palace, recent results have seen his stock fall dramatically and the Eagles remain hopeful.

Football Insider revealed that Palace will do everything in their power to keep Glasner at Selhurst Park despite the increasing likelihood of his departure.

Oliver Glasner could miss out on the Man United job

Football Insider revealed on 11 January that Glasner is on Man United’s shortlist, but will be rivalled by the likes of Enzo Maresca, Andoni Iraola and Thomas Tuchel.

However, Palace are currently winless in their last nine games and have dropped to 13th in the league table, and while the manager may not be entirely to blame, doubts are emerging.

Man United are having doubts about Glasner,” Brown told Football Insider.

“If they can’t pick up their form and performances soon, it’s more likely he will stay at Crystal Palace than join Man United, because it’s results that will dictate.

“Whether it’s his fault or not, Man United aren’t going to look into the reasons why Crystal Palace are struggling, all that matters is that they are.

“If they keep struggling, then you’ll get questions about why Glasner isn’t turning things around.

“From Palace’s point of view, the work he’s done and position he’s taken them in to since he arrived means they won’t be phased by a drop in form.

“They want him to sign a new contract and hope to keep that good work going. They won the FA Cup and they don’t want that just to be the end of it all.

“His future is still very much up in the air and it could go either way, but I expect a lot will depend on how well they do in the second half of the season.”

Crystal Palace hopeful of keeping Glasner

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham already this month, but are showing no signs of slowing down in the market.

Brown told Football Insider on 4 January that Crystal Palace are planning a “mega” January window as they aim to fill the glaring holes in their squad.

This comes amid concerns about their squad depth during an unprecedented winter schedule for the Eagles, with very few quality options on the bench.

Brown told Football Insider in November that Crystal Palace will back Glasner in January as they are aware they left him frustrated with their slow summer window.

They are hopeful that a busy January will prove their ambitious can match the manager’s and lure him into signing a new deal – although it is unlikely.
