Ollie Watkins: Expert can’t believe Aston Villa news after source’s reveal

Kevin Phillips has claimed Ollie Watkins must become more “consistent” for Aston Villa as Steven Gerrard’s side prepare new terms for the striker.

The former Claret and Blue hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested any potential renewal would be a “strange” move with the 26-year-old having three years to run on his current deal.

A recruitment source told this site on Tuesday (19 April) that Aston Villa are preparing a bumper new contract for Watkins to fend off potential suitors – with Arsenal having registered their interest.

The Midlands giants want to bring him in line with the other top earners at the club as a reward for his progress.

Watkins has netted eight goals in 28 games for Gerrard’s side this term.

Phillips insisted he is “surprised” to see Villa moving again to secure the striker’s long-term future.

“That’s a bit of a strange one,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“His form has been a little bit inconsistent. He’s had spells where he’s done really well, but then it has dipped a little bit.

“That’s understandable. After all, he hasn’t played in the Premier League for an awful long time.

“But I’m a bit surprised that they’re willing to give him a new contract – especially with three years still on his current deal.

“They obviously value him very highly.

“For me, I think he just has to become that little bit more consistent before he can be worthy of a big contract.”

England international Watkins netted 14 league goals last season – his first in the Premier League.

Aston Villa sit 15th in the top flight – some 16 points adrift of a European berth.
