O’Rourke updates on Van Dijk after Liverpool contract offer rejected

Virgil van Dijk is willing to sign a new Liverpool contract despite rejecting an initial offer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 33-year-old has turned down the chance to renew his Reds deal but it is believed that stance is part of standard negotiations.

Van Dijk’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

As such, the Liverpool captain can discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs from 1 January.

However, noises from both the club and Van Dijk’s camp suggest there is a willingness from both sides to find an agreement.

The towering defender has been back to his best under compatriot Arne Slot in the 2024-25 campaign and was named in the FIFPro World 11 on Monday (9 December).

Van Dijk, who will be 34 at the start of the 2025-26 season, signed his last extension in 2021.
