Ousmane Dembele: Arsenal ‘dodged a bullet’ after ‘devastating’ Romano transfer update

Arsenal “dodged a bullet” in Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele on deadline day, according to Kevin Campbell.

The former Highbury favourite, who delivered weekly punditry for La Liga TV last season, exclusively told Football Insider that the 24-year-old is “devastating on his day” but raised major concerns over his injury record.

On Monday (31 January), Sky Sports reported Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has completed a free transfer to Barcelona.

Barca’s Dembele was linked with a move in the opposite direction.

The La Liga giants were keen to offload the winger due to his sizeable wages at the Nou Camp.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano (31 January), Dembele had no interest in joining the Gunners as part of a deal.

When asked by Football Insider for his reaction to the news, Campbell said: “Arsenal dodged a bullet there.

“I don’t think we need Dembele.

“On his day he can be devastating but his injury record is worrying. I have watched him a lot in Spain and while he is a brilliant player, he can be just as frustrating.

“We have already got a similar player in Pepe. He can be devastating on his day but can equally be frustrating. We need players who are consistent.

“The Dembele move didn’t work out but in all honesty, I think it was for the best.”

Dembele has made just 11 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona this season because of injuries.

His contract expires at the end of June this year.

In other news, it can be revealed West Ham agreed a £5.5million striker fee on deadline day before a deal collapsed.
