Pape Matar Sarr: Tottenham expert shares ‘worrying’ verdict after development in last 24 hours

Pape Matar Sarr’s lack of game time at the Africa Cup Of Nations is “worrying” ahead of his return to Tottenham in the summer.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Sarr, 19, joined Tottenham in the summer but was loaned back to Metz for the season.

He has been away with Senegal at AFCON but only made his first appearance on Wednesday (2 February) as his side beat Burkina Faso 3-1.

Sarr missed the early part of the tournament after testing positive for Covid but upon his return to the side, he failed to make an impact.

With only 13 minutes to his name across the entire tournament, Wenham is concerned about the player’s chances of challenging for a place in next season’s Tottenham side.

“He’s barely played and I find that really frustrating,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I saw a report from some outlet claiming Sarr is going to be a transformative midfielder for us when he joins.

“But if he can’t get on the pitch, I’m not too sure whether I believe that.

“That being said, he did have Covid early in the tournament.

“He has since returned to the team but has failed to get off the bench until last night.

“This is a guy we spent a fair amount of money on and I find it quite worrying that he can’t get into that team.

“It doesn’t give me confidence that he will be able to challenge for a place in our team next season.”
