Paul Merson predicts Tottenham v Middlesbrough

By Harvey Byrne

Paul Merson has predicted a comfortable Tottenham win in their clash against Middlesbrough on Saturday evening

The north London club are currently gearing up to welcome Aitor Karanka’s side to White Hart Lane for the 5.30pm kick off.

It is an encounter which sees second take on 15th and Spurs are strong favourites to win the fixture despite their 0-0 draw with Sunderland in midweek.

Merson has seemingly sided with the majority and has tipped a 3-0 win for the home side, stating that he believes Tottenham will bounce back from the result against the Black Cats.

“Middlesbrough are quite solid at the back but they don’t score enough goals,” started Merson in his Sky Sports column.

“They are not going to blow Tottenham away and if Spurs get an early goal they could run away with it.

“Middlesbrough will set up to make things difficult for Tottenham but Mauricio Pochettino’s side need to win this game. It was a poor result against Sunderland but I expect them to bounce back.”

Tottenham last met Middlesbrough in September with a Son Heung-min double giving Mauricio Pochettino’s side all three points in a 2-1 victory.

They will be eager to see the same result on Saturday with nine points currently separating the north London club from top of the league Chelsea.

Spurs have won eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions with two draws against Sunderland Manchester City in those results.

Meanwhile, Boro have won just one of their previous four matches.

Additionally, Pochettino’s side have the joint best defensive record in the league, while Middlesbrough have the lowest goals for tally, which could work in Tottenham’s favour.
