Paul Merson: This is where Tottenham will finish this season

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has tipped Tottenham to finish in second place in the league table this season.

The north London side are currently league leaders Chelsea’s closest competitors with a nine point gap between the two teams.

They also mounted a title challenge in the last campaign, but a late collapse saw them fall below fierce rivals Arsenal and fall down to third.

Now, former Gunners ace Merson believes Tottenham have an eleven capable of going one better and has stated he feels they’ll finish as runners-up to Chelsea.

“I think Chelsea winning the title is a given,” told Merson to the Sky Sports website.

“You’ve only got to look at what they’ve done to teams outside the top six, winning 15 and drawing one, and they’ve only got two more games against top-six sides left. Then their nearest threats Tottenham go to Liverpool next weekend so there’s a good chance they’ll be even further clear.

“I’m putting Tottenham second though. I think they’ve got a very, very good 11 but I worry if Harry Kane got injured for a long period that neither Vincent Janssen or Heung-Min Son would do a job up front. In third place I’m going Man City, who I think have got too much in attack to miss out.”

Tottenham have not lost since a December 11 clash against Manchester United 11 matches a go.

The defeat against the Red Devils marked just their second in the league this campaign, where they have also won 14 and drawn eight of their 24 Premier League matches.

They have a tough trip to Anfield coming up on Saturday next, but Liverpool’s extremely poor form since the turn of the year may see Spurs fancy their chances of picking up a win.

The two top flight giants last met in the league in August with a penalty from James Milner cancelled out by a fine Danny Rose effort in a 1-1 draw.
