Paul Robinson Exclusive: Newcastle could learn a lesson from ‘phenomenal’ Leeds
Paul Robinson expressed his disappointment Newcastle United have failed to announce refunding season ticket holders – and claimed they could learn a lesson from his old club Leeds United.
The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, urged clubs to treat fans, who have spent tens of thousands watching their teams over the years, fairly in these difficult times.
The Newcastle United Supporters’ Trust sent a letter to the club two weeks ago asking if season ticket holders would be refunded for games played behind closed doors.
However, no statement has been given despite the BBC requesting comment and derby rivals Sunderland announcing a rebate would be available to their fans.
Clubs across Europe have made significant losses while the season has been suspended and that only stands to worsen until supporters can safely return to stadiums.
When asked by Football Insider if Newcastle fans were being treated unfairly, Robinson said: “It is the clubs prerogative and it is up to them what they want to do and what relationship they have with their fans.
“Leeds were one of the forerunners in refunding their season ticket holders. The phenomenal relationship they have with their fans, they felt it was important to do that.
“It is disappointing because fans pay money to watch football and it is no different to what the broadcasters are doing with clubs. The fans should be treated fairly by the clubs.
“Yes, there is financial hardship but the fans are going through that as well. For the fans to recoup £50-£150 could mean a lot.
“These are people that have spent hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands watching their football club over the years.”
