Pedro Porro sends heartfelt message to Son Heung-min amid Tottenham exit whispers

Pedro Porro has sent a heartfelt message to Tottenham teammate Son Heung-min amid rumours that he could depart the North London outfit this summer.

Tottenham have moved to hire Thomas Frank as their new boss in recent weeks, after Football Insider revealed on 1 June that chairman Daniel Levy was set to relieve Ange Postecoglou of his duties as manager, and the club officially announced his departure five days later.

Frank has a lot of work to do at his new club after leaving Brentford, and one of the biggest priorities for him will likely be to sort out Son’s future ahead of the new campaign.

He has been at Spurs for close to 10 years, after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015 for £22million (€30m) [BBC Sport], but Son is being targeted by Saudi Pro League clubs this summer after he had a lesser impact than usual in 2024/25.

Football Insider revealed on 10 June that Tottenham could accept offers for Son, with this summer’s window seen as the ideal opportunity to cash in, and so he could well be on his way out soon.

Pedro Porro sends birthday message to teammate Son

In the midst of rumours around his future, Son celebrated his 33rd birthday on Tuesday, 8 July, with Spurs sending him a message of their own on Instagram, saying: “Happy Birthday, Sonny.”

The South Korean legend’s Lilywhites teammate Porro also took the time out to send him a heartfelt birthday message, as he posted a picture of the pair celebrating on his Instagram story with a caption: “Happy birthday hermano” alongside three smiling face with hearts emojis.

Porro story to Son

Spurs should not let Son go this summer

Football Insider verdict

Son’s impact has clearly lessened over the last year or so at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and at 32-years-old, it feels unlikely that he is set to improve much further due to his reliance on his pace and power throughout his career.

He remains as Frank’s captain, though, and still managed to register 23 goal contributions in 46 games in all competitions in the last season, so the club will want a decent figure to be persuaded to sell him this summer.

That seems unlikely due to his age, despite Saudi interest, and so there seems like little reason for the club to let him leave unless he is desperate to do so, which would be surprise considering their return to the Champions League.

Tottenham also look to have missed out on Bryan Mbeumo as he nears a move to Man United, and so with Mathys Tel being their only attacking signing so far this summer, it would surely be unwise to let Son leave anytime soon.

The arrival of another attacker, such as Spurs-linked Mohammed Kudus, may well mean the 32-year-old is allowed to depart, but Spurs should not let him go regardless, as he is still a good player and a club legend for captaining them to silverware last season.
