Pep Guardiola: England job ‘beneath him’ but Man City reign ‘coming to an end’
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested the England job would have been “below” Man City boss Pep Guardiola.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Spaniard’s time at City is “coming to an end”, even if he signs a one-year contract extension.
Guardiola was widely linked with the England role following the departure of Gareth Southgate in July – but the FA appointed ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel on Wednesday (16 October).
The serial winner is currently out of contract at the Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
He has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and one Champions League title during his nine seasons at the helm of City.
The 53-year-old has commented publicly on his contract situation, claiming he is yet to make up his mind on a potential extension.
England job ‘is below’ Man City boss Guardiola, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think the England job would’ve been below him, to be honest.
“I don’t think it’s that important of a job. The media seem to think it’s the most important job in English football but I don’t think it is.
“The Premier League is a much bigger job than England.

“I don’t think Pep had any real interest in doing that job, and I’d have been very surprised if he took it.
“He may well run his contract out in the near future. Whether he does one more year, I don’t know, but I think his time at Man City is coming to an end.”
