Pep Guardiola: Pundit can’t believe Man City boss after Lisbon win – ‘did he say that?’

Pep Guardiola’s Man City squad won’t be upset by their manager’s critical comments after their win over Sporting Lisbon.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after City’s resounding midweek win.

Man City strolled to a 5-0 win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday (15 February), all but securing their place in the next round of the Champions League.

However, as quoted by The Guardian (15 February), Guardiola called his side’s performance “sloppy” and insisted “we can do better” despite the heavy win.

McAvennie was amused by the comments but admitted this is a by-product of the elite mentality Guardiola possesses.

“Wow, did he say that? That’s brilliant,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“That’s what Guardiola is like. He won’t suffer fools. If he isn’t happy with the performance he will tell you about it.

“He always wants to get better and to keep improving and even if they win 5-0 he will think there are areas to improve.

“I don’t think that will upset any players, they will be used to these kinds of comments.

“It’s amazing to hear as an outsider but that’s just the way Guardiola is, he has that elite mentality.”

Man City are next in action against Tottenham on Saturday (19 February).

The Blues could extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table if Liverpool stumble against Norwich earlier on Saturday.
