‘Perfect’ – Exclusive: Bent tips Rangers to seal game-changing deal as bid readied

Darren Bent has tipped Rangers to close the gap on Celtic if they can sign Liverpool starlet Curtis Jones on loan this summer.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the 19-year-old would be a “top-quality signing” for Steven Gerrard.

As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers are set to return with a loan bid for attacking midfielder this summer after failing twice during the January window.

The teenager made headlines in the 1-0 FA Cup win over Everton this season as he sealed victory with a stunning curling strike from outside the box.

Bent believes that Jones is the sort of player Rangers need to make if they are to catch Celtic at the top of the table and that Gerrard will be first in line for his signing.

“Listen, I quite like that thing between Gerrard and Klopp,” Bent told Football Insider.

“You’d like to think that all the talented youngsters that are coming out of Liverpool, Steven Gerrard will get first pick, because he’s an absolute legend, an icon of the football club.

“It would be the perfect situation for him to go up there and as a midfield player, to learn off someone like Steven Gerrard, you can’t get much better role models.

“If he is allowed to leave, I think that would be a top-quality signing for Rangers. They’ve got to find a way to close the gap to Celtic. Celtic can’t keep running away with the title.

“Curtis Jones has shown glimpses this season, that goal against Everton in the cup, that he’s got bags of quality.

“If someone like Rangers could get him, he’d be a great signing for them. If they can bring in players like Jones, there’s no reason they can’t close the gap.”

Jones has nine first-team appearances at Anfield, two of those coming as a substitute in the Premier League.
