Phil Foden’s stance on signing new Man City contract revealed

Man City star Phil Foden is nearing the final 18 months of his contract at his boyhood club with no new agreement on the table as yet.

Phil Foden has returned to form with Man City this season after a tough 2024-25 campaign saw him score just seven Premier League goals, his lowest return in five years.

The England playmaker last signed a contract extension with his boyhood club in 2022, and he is now one of a number of key City players who are edging closer to the end of their deals, with John Stones out of contract next summer.

Man City are desperate to keep hold of Foden and tie him down to a new deal, amid concerns that his head may be turned by other top clubs, and the 25-year-old could have a big decision about his future to make soon.

Phil Foden wants to stay at Man City and sign a new contract

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Foden is happy at Man City and is expecting to sign a new deal.

The 25-year-old’s recent return to form has seen him score against rivals Man United, while Foden also shone against Napoli with an assist for Erling Haaland and notched two goal contributions against Huddersfield Town in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking on the Inside Track podcast about his desire to remain at the Etihad Stadium, I explained: “Phil Foden’s a Manchester City boy through and through. It’s his club, he’ll want to stay there and pledge the best years of his career to City as well.

Foden still has a huge role to play at Man City and I’m sure they’ll be desperate to secure his future on a long-term contract because they’ll be looking to build their team around the likes of him going forward.

Man City want Michael Olise to join Foden at the Etihad

City made a number of high-profile signings over the recent summer window, but only Rayan Cherki came in to bolster their attacking depth, as Pep Guardiola was seemingly content with what he had at his disposal.

Guardiola’s side have struggled in the early stages of this term, despite Foden’s resurgence, with 10 points from their first six games of the season to currently sit seventh in the Premier League.

They will be planning more attacking additions in the near future, as a result, and Football Insider revealed on Friday (3 October) that Man City remain interested in Michael Olise alongside the likes of Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Olise’s potential arrival at the Etihad Stadium next summer would likely end Foden’s time playing on the right-wing under Guardiola, with his return to attacking midfield already serving him well so far this season.
