‘Philippe Clement to take Belgium job’ as Rangers compensation mooted

Phillipe Clement would exit Rangers for the Belgium job to give both sides a suitable escape from their current situation, says Tam McManus.

The ex-Hibs striker claimed on PLZ Soccer (18th November) that Light Blues fans “would not shed a tear” if the manager departs.

Clement has been under huge pressure this season at Ibrox as his team currently sits third in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind arch-rivals Celtic having already suffered three league defeats, sparking frustrations among supporters.

Asked if the 50-year-old would accept the national team job if offered McManus replied (39m 10s): “Yeah I think he would. I think the supporters would be happy as well, and maybe get compensation for him. Rangers supporters and the board wouldn’t be too disappointed if it were to materialise.

“I do not think fans are convinced about the long term project Philippe Clement keeps talking about. I don’t think you get long term projects in management particularly in Glasgow when it comes to Celtic and Rangers.”

Domenico Tedesco sack could spark Rangers exit

Philippe Clement’s situation at Ibrox, after joining the club in October 2023, highlights the ongoing instability at Ibrox.

The club is currently without a permanent chairman, CEO, or director of football, compounding the pressure on Clement.

Meanwhile, after Rangers recently reported a £17.2 million net loss for the previous season, the club’s leadership and financial struggles further amplify the challenges Clement faces as he tries to steady the ship.

He has been tipped as the favourite to become Belgium’s new boss after his former chief executive and mentor Vincent Mannaert was appointed Belgian FA sports director.

Belgium’s current manager, Domenico Tedesco, is under significant pressure following a 1-0 defeat to Israel which concluded their Nations League campaign. This loss left Belgium with just one win from their last six matches, following a disappointing Euro 2024 qualifying run.

Australian Kevin Muscat has been linked as a possible successor to Clement at Ibrox after capturing the Chinese Super League title with Shanghai Port, and might be a popular appointment if a change is on the cards.

Muscat who played for Rangers in the early 2000s, has gone on to achieve notable managerial success, although his career has largely been outside of Europe.
