‘Philippe Clement waiting for payoff’ – Rangers fans fume after resignation update
Rangers fans believe that Philippe Clement is waiting for a payoff instead of resigning after his comments following their embarrassing loss to Queen’s Park.
Rangers were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in a shocking 1-0 defeat to Scottish Championship side Queen’s Park on 9 February.
Clement is now under immense pressure at Ibrox, as this loss puts the club at risk of enduring a trophyless season.
Rangers supporters have heavily criticised Clement, with many calling for his resignation. However, after his recent comments in the post-match press conference, it seems unlikely that he will walk away voluntarily.
Steve Cooper emerges as a contender for the Rangers job
When asked if he would resign following the humiliating cup exit, Clement firmly dismissed the idea, insisting that stepping down is not “what the club needs.”
He said: “A few weeks ago or the last weeks, everybody says yes, everybody sees the evolution this club is making.
“So again, out of the emotion, taking decisions and turning everything around, I don’t think this is what the club needs.”
Despite Clement’s defiance, Football Insider has revealed that former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is in contention for the Rangers job.
Cooper, along with Derek McInnes, Russell Martin, and Kevin Muscat, is on the shortlist should Rangers part ways with Clement. The ex-Leicester City manager views the position as an appealing opportunity, despite the club’s off-field turmoil.
Rangers fans turn on Philippe Clement after shock cup exit
The Gers had built momentum in 2025 with a victory over Celtic and automatic qualification for the Europa League last 16.
However, the club now sit 13 points behind Celtic in the league, with Brendan Rodgers’ side looking set to claim yet another title.
The latest cup defeat has left supporters furious, as it puts Celtic on course for a potential domestic treble while Rangers face the prospect of a trophyless season.
Clement’s contract extension last summer complicates matters, as sacking him would come at a significant financial cost.
Fans are convinced he will refuse to step down to “receive a huge payoff” despite calls for his resignation, with one supporter claiming, “He’s staying until he’s paid every penny.” Another supporter said that he won’t resign and “it’s up to the board to act”.
As things stand, the Belgian remains in the dugout and focus now shifts back to the league as they face Hearts in the Scottish Premiership away from home on 16 February.
