Phillips ‘amazed’ by Ings after ‘massive’ Aston Villa footage emerges

Kevin Phillips has backed Aston Villa striker Danny Ings to go on a goalscoring run after his striker against Brentford.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Claret and Blue said Sunday’s goal was “massive” for Ings, 29, after a difficult period at Villa Park.

Ings scored his first goal under Steven Gerrard yesterday as Villa slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the Brentford Community Stadium.

As captured by Sky Sports (2 January), the striker was overjoyed to score his first goal since mid-October.

The summer signing from Southampton has been in and out of the side in recent months, predominantly because of injury.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his reaction to the celebration, Phillips said: “It’s been a difficult period for him with the injury.

“I thought it was an amazing signing when it happened. It came out of the blue really.

“I like Danny Ings a lot. He is an old fashioned type of centre-forward who wants to run in behind. There’s no doubt about it, he knows where the back of the net is. He’s been a fantastic finisher for years.

“Sometimes it takes a bit of time to settle in. The injuries have not helped.

“I have no qualms about him coming good though. He has the right attitude and bags of ability.

“It wouldn’t surprise me now if he goes on a run. You could see the relief on his face when he scored. It was massive for him.”
