Phillips: Bamford made up Tottenham link to leverage Leeds into handing him new contract
Kevin Phillips insists it was a no brainer for Leeds to get Patrick Bamford signed up to fresh terms.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest out of Elland Road.
On 19 August, Leeds announced Bamford has signed a new five-year deal with the club.
The Telegraph reported on 15 August that Leeds wanted to tie Bamford down to a new contract to ward off interest from Tottenham.
As per the Athletic in May, Bamford’s last deal ran until 2023 after he signed a one-year extension in secret last summer.
Tottenham may be looking for a new striker shortly as Harry Kane’s future once again dominates headlines.
Phillips doesn’t think there was any real interest from Spurs but praised Bamford for using the reports as leverage in negotiations.
“Why would you not sign him up?” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“I don’t think the Tottenham thing was ever real to be honest, no way.
“But that gave Bamford and his team a bit of leverage to use in negotiations so he got the best deal possible.
“I don’t think he would threaten to leave, maybe a hint. He’s a savvy boy.
“It’s great for the player and he’s clearly happy at Leeds. Everyone is happy.
“What he needs to do now is follow those performances from last season.
“Leeds obviously believe he can, hence the deal. No brainer gets chucked around a lot but this really is.”

Bamford was Leeds’ top scorer and creator last season with 17 goals and eight assists.
He is yet to find the net this season with Leeds losing and drawing their opening two games.
