Phillips: I can’t believe Leeds striker signing decision after Bamford deal agreed

Kevin Phillips insists it would be crazy for Leeds United to not sign a striker this summer.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims Patrick Bamford desperately needs back-up.

On 19 August, Leeds announced Bamford has signed a new five-year deal with the club.

The Englishman is Leeds’ only senior striker with last year’s summer signing Rodrigo often deployed in midfield.

He has failed to find the back of the net this season but scored 17 in the Premier League last term.

Phillips can’t believe Leeds haven’t yet bought another forward this summer.

When asked if he thought it would be crazy for Leeds to not sign a striker, Phillips told Football Insider’s Dylan Childs, “I do, I thought a striker would be a priority.

“I know the priority was to give him another long-term contract, which is great. But you can’t rely on him for a full season.

We saw him fade away at the back end of last season so I find it very surprising that they haven’t signed that back-up.

“Only time will tell if that decision will come back to haunt them. Let’s just hope Bamford stays fit.

“I do find it very surprising.”

Leeds United travel to Burnley this weekend and Bamford will look to get his first goal of the season.

The Whites are still looking for their first league win of the season after a loss to Man United and a draw with Everton.
