Phillips makes bold Neil claim after Sunderland news confirmed

Kevin Phillips is over the moon to see Dan Neil put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at Sunderland.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend said the 19-year-old has “a hell of a career in front of him” if he listens to the right people.

Sunderland announced on October 28th that the centre-midfielder had signed a new four-year deal on Wearside.

Neil has been one of the Black Cats star performers this season.

The academy product has contributed two goals and six assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Speaking to club media on the contract news, Lee Johnson said ‘incredibly excited’ by Neil’s future.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the new deal, Phillips said: “It is brilliant news. As we all know, he is a great player.

“He will go on to great things so long as he keeps his feet on the ground and keeps progressing.

“He has a hell of a career in front of him if he’s advised well. I’m sure he’s got a lot of people in his ear saying, ‘If you want this, I can get you that.’

“He is still very young and is early on in his career so there shouldn’t be too much pressure put on his shoulders.

“I’ve watched him a number of times in person now and he is a very good player. He’s very comfortable on the ball as well. An exciting player. It’s great news for Sunderland.”

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed the EFL’s Derby ruling could ‘open the floodgates’ for Sunderland.
