Phillips: This may be real reason Tottenham are taking Nuno over Potter
Tottenham are pursuing Nuno Espirito Santo over Graham Potter because of financial reasons, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Spurs would prefer to appoint Potter, 46, as their new manager but are unwilling to pay his compensation fee.
According to The Sun (27 June), Spurs would need to pay Brighton £15million to acquire the Englishman’s services as he is under a long-term contract.
Football Insider revealed on June 23rd that Spurs were holding talks with Nuno and that salary terms had been agreed.
New director of football Fabio Paratici is spearheading the club’s pursuit of the 47-year-old who is a free agent after leaving Wolves last month.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Phillips said: “Nuno is confusing me at the moment.

“He has nearly signed for everyone! It looks now like he will be the new manager of Tottenham.
“To get Graham Potter out of Brighton appears to be too much for Spurs. I was hearing it would cost them £15million so I am not surprised to see Nuno come back into the running.
” They need to appoint someone pretty quick, it has gone on far too long now. The Euros will be over before you know it and players will be coming back.
“It would be a big job for Nuno. Wolves to Tottenham is a big step up. He has showed that he gets the best out of his players though and he also plays an attractive brand of football.
“If Nuno is the choice, get it done. He is a good fit, it’s huge for him and there’s no compensation to pay either.”
