Phillips tipped to sign for Premier League rival after Liverpool update today – pundit

There will be Premier League clubs queuing up to sign Nat Phillips from Liverpool in January, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender suggested mid-table teams and those in the lower half would take a “gamble” on Phillips.

James Pearce of the Athletic reported today (24 December) he expects the colossal defender to leave the club next month.

It is claimed Liverpool have placed a £15million price tag on Phillips who wants to play more regularly and Jurgen Klopp will sanction a move.

Football Insider revealed last month (29 November) West Ham are lining up a move for the 24-year-old as they look to bolster their defensive ranks.

Phillips signed a new long-term contract at Anfield at the end of August after he helped the club secure a top-four finish in the 2020-21 campaign.

Despite his new deal, the Englishman has made just three appearances this term, including one start.

Asked whether he would expect more Premier League clubs to be interested in his signature, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think there will be a few, without a doubt.

“Certainly teams between mid-table and the lower half will be thinking ‘Ok, maybe we’ll bring him into the squad and see how he trains’.

“He’s definitely worth a gamble and I think he’ll sign for one of them.”

Phillips’ only start this term came in the 2-1 win over AC Milan at San Siro earlier this month (7 December).

He played 20 times across all competitions last season after a defensive injury crisis that saw Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all ruled out at times.
