Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang: Pundit hits back at Piers Morgan over Arsenal claim

Kevin Campbell has insisted Arsenal were right to get rid of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang despite the striker’s blistering start to life at Barcelona.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Highbury favourite said the 32-year-old was getting “worse the more he played” for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Aubameyang scored a hat-trick on his full league debut for Barcelona in a 4-1 win over Valencia on Sunday.

The Gunners sanctioned the Gabon international’s exit in January despite failing to find a replacement.

On Twitter (20 February), famous Arsenal supporter Piers Morgan slated Mikel Arteta for allowing Aubameyang to leave.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Morgan’s view, Campbell said: “I’m not even going to say his name.

“Look, we know what Aubameyang can do. I’m not surprised he’s hit the ground running at Barcelona.

“The fact of the matter is, he wasn’t doing it at Arsenal. The more he played, the worse he got. It just wasn’t happening. He fell out with the manager for whatever reason.

“Aubameyang can produce that. I can only wish him well. He can score goals and he is a top striker but his time at Arsenal had come to an end.

“We have moved on and we haven’t looked too bad without it.”

Aubameyang contributed 92 goals and 21 assists in 163 appearances for the Gunners.

He led Arsenal to the FA Cup trophy in 2020.
