'Players are spineless' – Expert lets rip on Everton after display v Arsenal
Everton’s players are ‘spineless’ and the manager has ‘lost his old fire’ – at least that was one expert verdict on the Toffees performance after their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal on Saturday.
Dominic King did not hold back in his views in The Mail which will not make easy reading for those involved at the top-level with the Blues.
King laid on an all-out attack and did not mince his words. He wrote: “Spineless. As this most dispiriting season limps towards a miserable conclusion, that is the only word suitable to describe Everton.
“This campaign has seen them melt with harrowing frequency and the Emirates Stadium annihilation was the sixth time they have been beaten by four or more goals since September. Inevitably after such results, blame rains down on the dugout.”
Although King pondered how long it would be before Allardyce was delivered with the same fate as Ronald Koeman, he did say that the blame did not lie solely with Big Sam.
Instead, he pointed the finger at the players for their lack of passion and lack of understanding as to what it meant to wear the blue shirt and what the badge represents.
King said in The Mail: “Many fans want more managerial change. Such are the rumblings of discontent that some are threatening not to return to Goodison Park next year if Allardyce remains in charge.
“Yet swinging the axe would not address the overriding issue — too many of this squad are going through the motions, drifting along and have made no attempt to understand what it means to play for Everton.
“The minimum requirement when pulling on a royal blue shirt is to fight, work and show you care. The vast majority who started at Arsenal did nothing of the sort. That is a travesty. That is why they are spineless.”
And so the Toffees will next take to the field of play on Saturday at Goodison Park against Crystal Palace with a chance for the players and the manager to repair some of the damage to an already disenchanted Everton faithful.
A win is vital at this stage of the season, particularly as the sides around them and at the bottom continue to pick up points here and there – it will the battle of two former England managers and a chance for one of them to trump the other.
