If you had suggested two weeks ago that Harry Kane could feature for Tottenham in their clash against Chelsea on Sunday, people would have looked at you as if you were mad.
The fears over the 24-year-old’s injury blow, which came in a collision with Asmir Begovic during the Premier League clash with Bournemouth, were considering months, not weeks, that the star striker would be sidelined, and after his history with ankle injuries, the long-term worries were not unwarranted.
Still there is no certainty about when the England hitman will return to action, having sat out the international break and focused on recovering to help in the end of season push for both a top four finish and the FA Cup trophy.
However, Pochettino has made a stunning revelation over his star man’s fitness, suggesting that there is a chance he will feature in this weekend’s crunch clash against Chelsea, one of their biggest rivals for the top four.
He said to Sky Sports on Thursday: “I think it is difficult now to say yes or no, to be involved or not in the game.
“I cannot say no but I cannot say yes.”
Tottenham fans would love to see their star man such a shock return to action after their initial fears, and of all the games this season, the visit to Chelsea would be high among their list of games they want Kane fit and firing for.
However Pochettino must be prepared to break all their hearts.
Kane might have pulled off a seemingly miraculous recovery but the truth of the matter is that he will still be feeling the effects of his layoff, in terms of both the actual injury as well as hit fitness.
Rushing him back will only give the injury the chance to reoccur, and considering just how important he is to the side, no risks can afford to be taken, especially with a World Cup campaign coming up.
Missing one game, even the Chelsea clash, is worth it to have him ready for every game after, and Pochettino must avoid temptation and keep him out of the squad come Sunday.
