Pochettino shares Tottenham January transfer plan for three emerging stars
By Harry Sykes
Mauricio Pochettino will refuse to allow emerging stars Harry Winks, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Josh Onomah to leave Tottenham on loan this month.
The Spurs manager has revealed he will snub all offers for the academy graduates to spend the rest of the season playing senior football elsewhere.
Pochettino explained that he regards the youthful trio as potential first-team players and wants them to develop under the close eyes of the club’s coaching staff.
Asked if he would consider loaning out Onomah this month, Pochettino said, as quoted by the official Tottenham website: “No, I think it’s clear – Josh is a potential first team player like Cameron Carter-Vickers, like Harry Winks and like all the youngsters that are in our academy.
“I think that the best way to improve is training with us and trying to show that he deserves to be involved. In that moment, be sure that we will give him the opportunity to play and show his quality but no, we are not thinking of sending him out.”
Central midfielder Winks, 20, has been a regular member of the Spurs matchday squad this season, making 21 appearances in all competitions, including six starts.
Attacking midfielder Onomah, 19, has made two starts from his nine appearances this season, with both of them coming in the League Cup.
Centre-back Carter-Vickers, who turned 19 on New Year’s Eve, has made just three appearances in 2016-17, although all of them were starts, including in the recent FA Cup win over Aston Villa.
Sky Sports claimed on their transfer centre blog on Wednesday (5.22pm) that Pochettino will prevent any first team squad members following Tom Carroll out of the exit door in the final 10 days of the January window.
Tottenham academy product Carroll signed for Swansea on Tuesday in a deal reported to be worth an initial £4.5million and rising to £9million with add-ons.
Spurs travel to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday aiming for a seventh consecutive league win.
They have won their last six matches in the top flight, including last weekend’s demolition of West Brom and a 2-0 victory over Chelsea, to climb to second in the division.
