Postecoglou has ‘signed off on the deal’ as Tottenham-Vicario deal agreed – Agbonlahor

Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Tottenham fans should not be worried by a potentially “risky” move for low-profile goalkeeper Gugliemo Vicario.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, cited Ange Postecoglou’s stellar record in the transfer market and insisted the club will have “done their homework”.

Tottenham announced the signing of Vicario from Empoli on Tuesday (27 June), with the Italian signing a five-year deal at the club.

According to Sky Sports (27 June), Spurs will pay an initial fee of £17.2million for the shot-stopper, with further bonuses increasing that fee based on performance.

Vicario made 32 appearances across all competitions for Empoli last term, conceding 41 goals and keeping seven clean sheets.

The 26-year-old has racked up 241 appearances but is yet to make his international bow for Italy despite being called up to their most recent squad.

Vicario could replace Hugo Lloris – who has signalled his desire to quit Tottenham this summer despite having a year to run on his contract.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a risk to bring someone like this in.

“But Spurs will have done their homework. Ange Postecoglou has a good reputation in the transfer market, and I’m sure he will have signed off on this deal.

“Sometimes players haven’t got the right experience, but Tottenham need a long-term replacement.

“Even if he hasn’t played internationally or in the European competitions, I’m sure the club will have done their research.

“I wouldn’t be worried.”
