Premier League make announcement on controversial Brentford vs Burnley incident

Igor Thiago was on hand to score from the penalty spot again for Brentford on Saturday as they saw off Burnley 3-1.

Tottenham are among the teams already showing interest in Thiago, with the striker scoring his 11th Premier League goal on Saturday.

The Brazilian arrived from Club Brugge in the summer and has been an instant hit at the Gtech Community Stadium, providing a constant source of goals for Keith Andrews‘ team.

Thiago could make a late push for Brazil’s World Cup squad on current form, with the 24-year-old still waiting to make his international debut.

Andrews struggled in his opening weeks as Brentford boss, but the Irishman’s side now sit eighth in the Premier League and above Tottenham, who former Bees boss Thomas Frank joined in the summer.

Premier League clarify Brentford penalty

Brentford received a controversial penalty against Brighton last week, with Dango Ouattara accused of diving for the spot-kick.

The Bees have already received seven penalties in just 13 Premier League games so far this season, with Thiago netting from five of them.

The seventh would come at a crucial time for Andrew’s team on Saturday, with the scores locked goalless in the 78th minute.

Ouattara was caught late by Axel Tuanzebe as he looked to break into the penalty area, with Sam Barrott pointing to the spot instantly.

The video assistant referee took some time to check the decision but ultimately confirmed the decision, with Thiago coolly converting from the spot.

Premier League Match Centre would clarify the process and said: “The referee’s call of penalty to Brentford was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Tuanzebe deemed to have tripped Ouattara.

“The VAR also checked and confirmed the decision of no offside offence against Thiago.”

Late drama as Brentford beat Burnley

Burnley would get a penalty of their own just minutes later when Michael Kayode brought down Jaidon Anthony inside the box.

Zian Flemming converted, but parity for the Clarets would be gone as quickly as it came, when Thiago scored his and Brentford’s second.

Ouattara would put the seal on the three points for the Bees when he added a third in stoppage time.

Brentford face a difficult away trip to Arsenal next in the Premier League, while Burnley will hope to stop the rot against Crystal Palace.
