Premier League respond to Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi announcement

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi suffered an injury after colliding with the post in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City.

Forest’s Premier League clash with the Foxes was controversial, as owner Evangelos Marinakis went onto the pitch before confronting boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Espirito Santo’s men are now winless in their last four games in all competitions, after enduring back-to-back draws with Crystal Palace and Leicester.

Forest have not won since a 2-1 victory over Tottenham on 21 April, when goals from Elliot Anderson and Chris Wood sealed a win in North London.

Premier League respond as Forest reveal Awoniyi requires surgery

Awoniyi has deputised for the in-form Wood this term, but has managed just three Premier League starts in 26 top-flight appearances.

Forest revealed via X [13 May] that the 27-year-old requires surgery after sustaining an abdominal injury in Sunday’s encounter with Leicester.

The Premier League’s official X account commented: “Sending our best wishes, Taiwo. Get well soon!”

Nottingham Forest’s Champions League chances now hang by a thread

Forest have enjoyed a largely successful Premier League campaign, occupying third-spot for lengthy spells of the season despite finding themselves in a relegation battle just last term.

Espirito Santo’s men also enjoyed a successful FA Cup run, reaching the semi-finals where they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City.

But after losing to Pep Guardiola’s men at Wembley, Forest were beaten 2-0 by Brentford before failing to get the better of Palace and Leicester.

Consequently, the City Ground outfit are now seventh in the Premier League, one point adrift of fifth-place Chelsea with just two games remaining.

Sunday’s draw with already relegated Leicester could show that Forest no longer have what it takes to land a Champions League spot.

Espirito Santo’s men will have to beat West Ham on Sunday, 18 May, before facing a crunch clash with Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season.

But on current form, the East Midlands outfit appear unlikely to beat the likes of Enzo Maresca’s side to the final Champions League place.
