Pundit: £64m transfer reveal may be real reason Man United didn’t bid for Kane

Man United did not make a concrete bid to sign Harry Kane this summer as a deal for Erling Haaland in 2022 is more appealing.

That is the view of former England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the possible reasons for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side missing out on Kane, 27.

The England captain revealed on Twitter yesterday that he would not be leaving Spurs this summer.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City saw bids of £104million and £128million rejected by Tottenham.

Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland is another striker who has been linked with a big-money move this summer.

According to Marca, via the Daily Mail (August 21st), the striker’s £64million release clause could be being brought forward to January of next year.

Robinson believes Haaland’s release clause is a contributing factor to Man United’s decision not to launch a mega-money bid for Kane.

“There will be a lot of competition for Haaland,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “More clubs will be interested in Haaland than Kane because he is so young and I think that is why we haven’t seen United go in for Kane.

“When you think about it, £150million for a 27-year-old who’s injury record is not very good, it’s not the best value for money.

“When you look at Haaland, who is 20 with stats as good as Kane, the deal makes more financial sense.

“I think the Haaland deal will cost around £150-200million overall when you include wages and agent fees. It’s a lot of money but it probably is more appealing to a club like Man United than paying £150million for Kane.

“One thing is for sure, it is certainly a position they need to strengthen in.”
