Pundit backs ‘brilliant’ Frank Lampard as ‘amazing’ Everton signings lauded

Frank Lampard is being hampered by years of poor decision-making at Everton despite some “amazing” summer signings.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Blues’ start to the season.

Following Saturday’s (22 October) 3-0 win against Crystal Palace, Everton have now three Premier League games this season.

They most recently lost 1-0 to Newcastle United (19 October), failing to register a shot on target for the second time in as many games.

That result left the Toffees one point off the relegation zone before Saturday’s turnaround.

McManus insists Lampard cannot be blamed for the club’s poor form.

“Terrible decisions have been made at that club for years,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“I think Frank did a brilliant job keeping them in the league last season because at various points it looked like they were going down.

“They have invested this summer but it isn’t really his squad yet so it is still hard to judge. The signings he has made have been amazing, including Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Idrissa Gueye on deadline day, and that defence is much better this season than it was last season.

“They are lacking goals though and he has brought his own striker in so there needs to be improvement there.

“I just don’t think it is fair to criticise a manager who has come into a club like that and has done that job.”

Everton’s wins this season came against Southampton and West Ham in back-to-back wins in September.

Going into Saturday’s game against Palace they had lost three in a row.
