Pundit backs Seamus Coleman for ‘big’ new role at Everton after what he’s seen
Noel Whelan has claimed a new contract will not be in the mind of Seamus Coleman as he prepares to deputise for injured Everton star Nathan Patterson.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, backed the 33-year-old for a future coaching role at Goodison Park.
Coleman, who is still the club captain at Everton despite his limited game time in the new campaign, is out of contract at the end of the season.
Everton confirmed via club media earlier this week (28 September) that Patterson will be out for up to five weeks with an ankle injury he sustained while representing Scotland.
Speaking in his pre-Southampton press conference (29 September), Lampard insisted he has “no worries” about Coleman coming into the side – insisting he has a “big influence” on the pitch.
The former Chelsea boss, speaking after Everton’s escape from relegation last season, branded the Republic of Ireland right-back “one of the best men he’s met” in football.
Whelan insisted Coleman is “needed” in the Toffees dressing room.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I’m not sure Coleman will be thinking of a new deal.
“He’ll be focusing on playing for a club he loves and showing that pride and professionalism to help the squad.
“He probably realises that he’s put his body through quite a lot during his career, and he’s now there as a bit-part player.
“But he’s needed for times like this, and he’s definitely got the right experience to do the job.
“Lampard needs players like him in the dressing room. He’s got a big, strong opinion about the football club.

“He’s someone who will understand where he’s at in his career. I could even see him getting a coaching role at the club.
“He’s not a bad player to turn to right now, and he’s someone that Frank Lampard trusts.”
