Pundit ‘baffled’ as source reveals new twist in Chelsea hunt for Anthony Gordon

Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted he is “baffled” Chelsea want to sign Anthony Gordon from Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Chelsea should focus their attention on signing a striker rather than another wide forward.

Football Insider reported earlier this week (16 August) that the Blues were readying a new £50million bid for the 21-year-old after an submitting an initial £40million offer.

A source updated this site on Thursday (18 August) to reveal they have offered midfielder Billy Gilmour and striker Michy Batshuayi plus cash in exchange for Gordon.

Everton have registered their interest in both players this summer after they both worked under Frank Lampard during his time as Chelsea boss.

“I just don’t understand Chelsea,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“They baffle me, to be honest. They don’t need any more wingers, they need strikers.

“For goodness sake, it’s not rocket science. Why would you go for Gordon when you’ve got enough wingers there who are good enough?

“You need a flipping number nine who can score goals.

“For me, if I’m Everton I’m saying ‘Any offers for Gordon we’re not even looking at. We don’t care if it’s £40million, £50million or £60million, we need to keep players at the moment, we can’t afford to let them go’.

“They sold Richarlison, that’s the big one for the summer who they let go because it was good money.

“From now on, nobody’s sellable. I think that’s where Everton will stand, to be honest.”
