Pundit baffled by Chelsea after details of Marc Cucurella transfer revealed by Sky – ‘it’s strange’
Alan Hutton has suggested Marc Cucurella could be first choice over Ben Chilwell at Chelsea this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender said the Blues would not spend “£60million” on a “back-up player”.
On Friday (5 August), Chelsea confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old from Brighton.
The left-back put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
According to Sky Sports (6 August), the deal for the defender could be worth in excess of £60million.
The Spain international was registered in time to feature in the London club’s 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday (6 August).
He started on the bench but came on to replace Kalidou Koulibaly who was forced off through injury in the final 15 minutes of the match.
When asked how he thought the defender could fit in to Thomas Tuchel’s side, Hutton told Football Insider: “It is a strange one, Chelsea kind of came out of nowhere.
“Do I think they need to spend £60m on a left-back? No I don’t.

“I think they’ve got Chilwell there who’s one of the best in the league. Yes he had a big injury problem last season but it doesn’t seem like they’re bringing him [Cucurella] in as back-up.
“You don’t sign a £60m player as a back up player so it’s a bit of a strange one. We’ll have to wait and see how it works out.“
In other news, a pundit has suggested Chelsea could ‘throw money’ at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after latest.
