Pundit baffled by Tottenham after source’s Leandro Trossard update – ‘makes no sense’

Tottenham should not be making a move for Leandro Trossard while their defence is in need of major surgery.

That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Spurs transfer plans.

Sources told this site on Monday (9 January) that Tottenham have seen a verbal offer for Trossard, 28, knocked back by Brighton.

It is understood that the Seagulls have no intention of letting the Belgium international go this month.

As per TalkSPORT (10 January), the Seagulls have triggered a one-year extension clause in Trossard’s contract, keeping him at the club until June 2024.

McManus is baffled as to why Spurs are interested in the attacker.

“The only name I have seen in relation to Spurs recently is Trossard down at Brighton,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“I was a bit surprised to hear that. Do they really need another attacker? That’s the only position where they have plenty of depth and strength, the attack.

“They are crying out for defenders. A new right back and centre back should be top of their list, absolutely top of the list.

“Instead they are looking at Trossard. I just don’t get that to be honest. He’s a good player and he would do a job for Spurs but is he what they need?

“Goals haven’t been the problem, it’s been the defence, They have conceded almost the same number of goals as Everton and West Ham and they are right down there.

“I would be surprised if they signed an attacker before a defender.

“It just makes no sense.”
