Pundit ‘baffled’ by West Ham source’s Duvan Zapata update in last 24 hours

Gabby Agbonlahor has admitted he is “baffled” West Ham did not add to their squad in the January transfer window.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward claimed the West Ham hierarchy may not want to finish in the top-four as they failed to sign a striker or a centre-back in the window.

An Irons source told Football Insider today (1 February) they failed with a last-gasp loan-to-buy deal for Atalanta forward Duvan Zapata.

The two clubs agreed a £5.5million loan fee and there would have been an option to make the deal permanent in the summer.

“I’m baffled,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“I thought in November they had to sign a striker in January, they needed more help in there.

“They also needed more back up for Tomas Soucek and Declan Rice as well as a centre-half, obviously.

“To be honest it shows West Ham’s aspirations. They obviously don’t want to get top-four because if they wanted to get top-four they would have brought in players.

“Maybe the club are happy with a top-six, top-seven finish but even that is not guaranteed. There are a lot of teams fighting for positions.

“I’m just baffled West Ham haven’t brought in anybody. Antonio is not far off a hamstring injury at times then you’re going to be left with Vlasic who, for me, is not amazing.

“It’s very strange from West Ham and I’m sure their fans will be very frustrated.

“With the Zupata deal, it’s too late by then. You’ve not given Atalanta a chance to get anybody in.”

In other news, West Ham have been tipped to beat ‘bigger clubs’ to sign a ‘brilliant’ Premier League striker this summer.
