Pundit can’t believe Aston Villa could sign ‘next Mason Mount’ after update
Noel Whelan has urged Aston Villa to complete a “very exciting” swoop for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher if he becomes available this summer.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted he would be “very surprised” if the 22-year-old isn’t given the opportunity to prove himself at Stamford Bridge – believing he can follow in the footsteps of Mason Mount.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who was speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast (27 June), Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is a massive fan of Gallagher and could make a move for the midfielder this summer.

The four-time England international scored eight goals and registered five assists in 39 appearances on loan at Crystal Palace during the 2021-22 season.
The midfielder could get his Chelsea chance when their pre-season kicks off next week (17 July).
When asked if Gallagher would be an upgrade on current Villa star Douglas Luiz, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “He would be, yeah.
“Douglas Luiz is more of a defensive option – a stopper. I think Gallagher would give them something different.
“I think Gallagher is a very exciting player, and we saw that last season with Crystal Palace.
“If he doesn’t get the opportunity at Chelsea, which I hope he does, then I’d be very surprised.
“He’d fit straight in at Stamford Bridge alongside the likes of Mason Mount. He can follow in Mount’s footsteps if he gets that opportunity and become one of the best midfield players in the country.

“If Aston Villa manage to get him through the door then it would just take their midfield to another level this summer – especially after already signing Coutinho.
“It could be very exciting.”
