Pundit can’t believe Celtic ‘humiliation’ amid ‘massive’ new development
Noel Whelan has insisted the step into the Champions League for Celtic has been a “massive challenge” but not a “humiliation”.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the “learning curve” will be helpful for the Hoops to improve in future campaigns.
Celtic sit bottom of Group F after five games and although they have already been eliminated from knockout round contention – they can still qualify for the Europa League.
Ange Postecoglou’s men qualified for the group stage of the competition for the first time since the 2017-18 season after winning the Scottish Premiership last season.
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald (22 October), the Australian insisted his side have been “competitive” this season – but are “falling short in a couple of areas”.
He conceded it would take “time” and “investment” before Celtic can hope to move up the ladder in Europe.
Whelan claimed both Glasgow sides will feel they “could have done better” this term.
When asked for his thoughts on Celtic’s Champions League campaign so far, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think it’s been a humiliation.
“It’s a massive challenge, for Rangers and Celtic.
“They’re extremely strong in the Premiership and in their cup competitions, but it’s a different kettle of fish in the Champions League.
“When you step out of that comfort zone and play against some of the best teams in the world, this is what happens.

“It’s a learning curve. Ultimately this is where they want to be, so they’ll have to go through these defeats to learn how they can improve for next time.
“It’s a great achievement to get into the competition, but with the way the two teams have gone out, they probably feel they could have done better.”
