Pundit can’t believe Everton could sell Anthony Gordon amid £70m claim

Noel Whelan has insisted selling Anthony Gordon would be a “kick in the teeth” for the Everton fans so soon after losing talisman Richarlison.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Toffees should be looking to build around the 21-year-old rather than move him on this summer.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (6 July) that Newcastle have submitted a £35million bid for Everton sensation Gordon.

The winger started 25 Premier League matches and his 40 appearances in all competitions during the 2021-22 campaign yielded four goals and three assists.

Gordon is under contract until June 2025.

Whelan suggested the England Under-21 star could be worth as much as £70million this time next summer if he can have a fruitful 2022-23 campaign.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “You never want to let go of your young starlets, do you?

“He really did catch the eye of a lot of people last season. He was one of the more standout players with the pace he has and the way he plays the game.

“It was a difficult season but they did manage to stay up – and I think that’ll make a massive difference. If they had gone down then I think you would have seen a few more players leaving.

“When you’ve already sold one player in Richarlison for £60million, to lose someone who has come through the ranks as well – that would be a kick in the teeth.

“I’m sure the Everton fans want to see the team built around players like Gordon instead.

“Who knows? One more season with him around and you could even double that £35million valuation, and get a really huge fee.”
