Pundit can’t believe Everton could sign Miguel Almiron after journalist’s update
Noel Whelan has insisted Everton should steer clear of Miguel Almiron and instead look to sign a striker and a creative midfielder.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Newcastle wouldn’t sanction the 28-year-old’s exit if he could be an “important player in the Premier League”.
According to The Guardian journalist Ed Aarons (23 August), Everton are interested in signing Almiron – with the Magpies only willing to let him leave on a permanent basis.
The Paraguay international is out of contract in June 2024.
He has managed just 15 goals and five assists in 126 games for Newcastle since joining the club from Atlanta United in 2019.
The midfielder has started each of the Magpies’ first three league games of this term after falling down the pecking order last season.
Whelan insisted links to Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja would be a much more tantalising prospect for Everton.
He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “If he had the ability to be an important player in the Premier League, then Newcastle wouldn’t want to let him go on a permanent.
“For me, the two players linked at Chelsea (Gallagher and Broja) whet my appetite a lot more.
“You know what you’re getting with Almiron. You’ll get energy, he’s got quality on his day, but do they really need him?

“I think they need a creative midfielder more than a wide player. They’ve got Gray, Iwobi, McNeil, Gordon.
“A striker is another priority.”
