Pundit can’t believe Man City could axe Riyad Mahrez as new quotes emerge

Noel Whelan has claimed Riyad Mahrez still has “so much to offer” after he revealed plans to retire at Man City.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 31-year-old can still win games single-handedly but would have to accept a “rotational role”.

Speaking to club media (22 September), Mahrez stated his desire to retire as a Man City player and play for as long as he can.

The Algeria international, who was City’s top scorer in all competitions in the 2021-22 season with 21 goals, has started just a third of games for the Premier League champions this term.

The former Leicester star’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is currently set to expire in June 2025 after he signed a new deal in July.

Whelan insisted City boss Pep Guardiola will still “appreciate” the wingers’ talents despite him taking on a more reduced role.

When asked if Mahrez still has a part to play at Man City for this season and beyond, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely.

“He’s a very fit player – even at 31, you’d still take Mahrez in your team any day of the week.

“He recognises that the younger generation are there, but wow, what a player to have coming off the bench.

“He’s still got so much to offer. He is someone who can do something out of nothing and win games single-handedly.

“He probably has one of the best left feet in the Premier League.

“If he’s more than happy to play that rotational role, coming off the bench, then what a great attitude to have.

“I’m sure Pep appreciates that and appreciates what an important player he still is.”
