Pundit can’t believe Man United after Marko Arnautovic bid update

Noel Whelan has insisted players are no longer unable to resist the allure of Man United after their muted transfer window resulted in a 2-1 opening day defeat against Brighton.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed links with Marco Arnautovic, 33, are borne out of “desperation” from Old Trafford chiefs.

According to Sky Sports (8 August), Man United have seen a bid of around €9million (£7.6million) for Arnautovic rejected by Bologna.

Speaking on Sunday (7 August), former Red Devils star Gary Neville insisted a “pattern” is emerging at his old club after the signing of veterans Odion Ighalo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Radamel Falcao in recent years.

Man United have failed to land their top transfer targets this summer, with Frenkie de Jong and Darwin Nunez resisting moves to the 20-time English champions.

Whelan claimed the Old Trafford side have lost their “shine” – with the on-field problems stemming from the ownership of the Glazer family.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s desperation, isn’t it?

“You just think to yourself – surely Man United can go out there and get someone with a bit of longevity?

“Where’s the money for new players? Where’s the fight to get players through the door?

“They’re not the same anymore. It’s no longer the case that you can’t resist a move to Old Trafford.

“It’s still a big club but they’ve lost that shine. It starts with the Glazers, and now it has filtered all the way down to the players on the pitch.

“Players are right to question whether they want to go to Man United because it’s really not a healthy place right now.”
