Pundit ‘can’t believe’ Newcastle United amid Youri Tielemans transfer development

Tam McManus “can’t believe” Newcastle United haven’t signed Youri Tielemans this month.

The former Hibernian striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Belgian’s future, insists the Magpies should make a move.

Tielemans, 25, has six months left on his Leicester deal and has been heavily linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium during the last few transfer windows.

On 28 December, The Telegraph reported the Leicester midfielder is “of interest” to the Magpies following a long-term injury to Jonjo Shelvey.

Newcastle are yet to make any signing this month despite questions over the depth of the squad as they look to reach a cup final and finish as high up the table as possible.

McManus insists the Belgium international would be a “sensational” signing for the Magpies.

“I can’t believe Newcastle haven’t at least made a move for him,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“Howe has been saying how much they need a new midfielder and he’s right there for the taking. I don’t get that one.

“Tielemans would be a sensational signing for any of the top four clubs and Newcastle, right now, are up there.

“It’s going to boil down to finances, he will be looking for a big payday as a soon-to-be free agent. So if Newcastle can stick up the money then I think he would be a tremendous signing.

“It gives Newcastle another quality option when going forward.”

Tielemans has started all but two of the Foxes’ Premier League games this season.

He has scored three goals.
