Pundit can’t believe Newcastle United could scrap transfer policy amid ‘amazing’ new claim
Noel Whelan has claimed Newcastle should continue to steer clear of the “top” bracket of player even as their march up the Premier League table continues.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Magpies are “amazing to watch” with the players all “enjoying life” at St James’ Park.
Newcastle recorded a second big win in as many games on Saturday (8 October), beating Brentford 5-1 to follow up their 4-1 victory over Fulham a week earlier (1 October).
Eddie Howe’s side now sit sixth in the Premier League having lost just one of their nine top-flight games so far this season.
The Magpies have avoided superstar signings despite a number of links to high-profile players, instead opting to bring young talents like Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes to St James’ Park for big money.
Whelan insisted they are now looking like “top six challengers”.
When asked if Newcastle’s goalscoring exploits is evidence of a team destined for greater things, he told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “Absolutely, they’re amazing to watch.
“But at the same time, they’re a strong unit. They’re defensively strong, the midfield looks like they’re enjoying themselves, and you’ve got goals from all kinds of areas.
“They’re all very confident and enjoying life, which Guimaraes touched on after the match.
“When you’re winning football games, that can only be the case.
“They’re building a really strong side now, and they’re looking like top six challengers. And this is even without some players on the treatment table.

“They haven’t signed the top players. What they have done is sign the best of the rest, and it’s really worked for them.
“As they climb up the table there might be the temptation to go for that Pot A player, but this is proof that they don’t really need to.”
