Pundit can’t believe Rangers could sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst after new talks

Noel Whelan has claimed it would make “no sense” for Rangers to sack Giovanni van Bronckhorst despite heavy back-to-back defeats in the last week.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker was speaking exclusively to Football Insider in the wake of the Gers’ 4-0 loss against Ajax in their first Champions League group match on Tuesday (6 September).

Writing in his Glasgow Evening Times column (7 September), journalist Christopher Jack claimed Van Bronckhorst’s future is “up for discussion” with talks inside the Ibrox boardroom set to decide his fate.

Rangers’ loss in Europe came just days after a chastening 4-0 Old Firm defeat at Parkhead (3 September).

Van Bronckhorst has recorded a points-per-game record of 2.15 since taking charge at Ibrox last year (2021) – the same as his predecessor, Steven Gerrard.

Whelan insisted the “harsh reality” is that Celtic and Ajax are better sides than the Gers.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think it makes any sense to sack him right now.

“They’ve been beaten by two exceptional sides. In my opinion, both Celtic and Ajax are better than Rangers – they have better players and play a better style.

“If they could just put in that extra bit of effort, cut out the silly mistakes – it could have been a different story.

“But they just gave the ball away too much, there was no fluidity to their football, they conceded easy goals.

Rangers

“All these mistakes you can get away with in the Scottish Premiership – but you won’t get away with it in the Champions League.

“I think Rangers have got to realise what they’re up against. The harsh reality is that Celtic and Ajax are just better than them.”

In other news, pundit claims Rangers are guilty of “unforgivable” act as “unacceptable” claim issued.
