Pundit can’t believe Rangers could sell Glen Kamara after £7m bid update

Noel Whelan has insisted Rangers should not consider selling star midfielder Glen Kamara this summer amid interest from Galatasaray.

The former Leeds and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed “money shouldn’t be an issue” for the Ibrox club after the sales of Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo this summer.

According to the Daily Mail (18 July), Galatasaray have shown interest in signing Kamara, 26, and have proposed a £7million bid to Rangers.

The Gers’ summer incomings total almost £35million after the sales of Bassey, Aribo and Cedric Itten.

Kamara, who signed a fresh four-year contract in September 2021, made 52 appearances during the 2021-22 season.

Whelan suggested it would be “very difficult” for Rangers to replace the “spine” of their side if the midfielder were to depart.

“Money shouldn’t be an issue for them now,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“They’ve had two big sales this summer [Bassey and Aribo] and they will have done well from getting to the Europa League final too.

“Financially they’re in a very solid position.

“You don’t want to lose all your players. The release clauses in the contracts will have played a part – but if Kamara doesn’t have one or it isn’t met – he’s definitely one they need to keep.

“He’s a big player to lose because he holds that midfield together. It’s very difficult to replace the whole spine of a side – and that’s what they’ll have to do if he leaves.”

Rangers kick off their Scottish Premiership campaign against Livingston on 30 July.

They will also enter Champions League qualifying with a two-legged tie against Union Saint-Gilloise in August.
