Pundit can’t believe Rudiger could join Tottenham after ‘massively surprising’ report

Noel Whelan has insisted he would be “massively surprised” if Antonio Rudiger decides to join Tottenham when he becomes a free agent.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Spurs “don’t have enough to entice” the 28-year-old.

As reported by the Independent last Thursday (8 December), Tottenham are one of the sides chasing Rudiger as he prepares to become a free agent when his Chelsea contract expires next summer.

The report claims Spurs face competition from Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid.

Whelan insisted joining the north London side would be a “step down” from Chelsea – with whom he won the Champions League last term.

“Will Tottenham be at the top of Rudiger’s list? No, they won’t,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“When Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Man United are all on the table with Tottenham, which one are you leaving out first? Spurs.

“They might not even be playing Champions League football next season, and he’s leaving a club where he’s just won the Champions League.

“It’s not a step up from Chelsea, it’s a step down. They don’t have enough to entice him.

“If he’s leaving on a free contract, there’s no reason why he can’t go to Bayern Munich or Real Madrid. It’s massively surprising Spurs are in the race.”
