Pundit can’t believe Tottenham could axe ‘four star players’ amid new claim

Noel Whelan has claimed it would be “dangerous” for Tottenham to rest any of their key men against Eintracht Frankfurt despite three games in seven days for Antonio Conte’s side.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted Spurs will have to “get the rest and recovery right” in a “tough” period over the next week.

Tottenham take on Frankfurt on Wednesday (12 October) with their qualification to the Champions League knockout stage hanging in the balance.

Conte’s side sit second in Group D but could drop to the bottom if results go against them this week.

Spurs drew 0-0 in the reverse fixture in Germany last week (4 October).

The north London giants face games against Frankfurt, Everton, and Man United in the space of seven days as the 2022-23 campaign ramps up ahead of next month’s World Cup in Qatar.

Whelan insisted no player will want to miss out despite a less than “ideal” schedule.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s pretty much the same for every team now.

“They’ve got to take control of the group and play their best team in order to get through to the knockout stages.

“They don’t quite have the depth that Man City have, so the players will have to be ready for this period. They have to get the rest and recovery right.

“But don’t tell me that any player will want to miss out on any of these three games.

“They know it’s going to be tough, and it’s not ideal – but that’s why they get paid lots of money.

“It’d be very dangerous for Antonio Conte to leave even three or four of their best players out against Frankfurt to rest them.”
