Pundit can't believe what he's heard from Ronaldo at Man United

Kevin Phillips has slammed Man United striker Cristiano Ronaldo for his “unhelpful” comments ahead of the draw with Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner urged the 36-year-old to keep his opinions to himself amid “clear” dressing room unrest.

In an interview with Sky Sports (13 January), Ronaldo said he “knows the way” the Red Devils can change their fortunes but refused to reveal it as “it’s not ethical” to do so.

The Portugal international has missed United’s last two fixtures with a hip injury.

In the absence of Ronaldo, Ralf Rangnick’s side lost further ground in the race for the top four after a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Ronaldo’s interview, Phillips said: “I don’t think his comments helped at all.

“As a player you get asked questions but sometimes you need to bat it back and keep your opinions to yourself. Players should do their talking on the pitch and do what their manager tells them to do.

“This is Ronaldo, when he speaks people listen. I just don’t think his comments were helpful in a time when United are struggling.

“Clearly things are not right in that dressing room, in that camp. Players coming out in the press and saying their bit isn’t helpful.”

Football Insider revealed (1 January) that Man United stars are at loggerheads in the dressing room.

Ronaldo and countryman Bruno Fernandes are believed to have clashed behind the scenes.
