Pundit can’t believe what he’s spotted from Sean Longstaff at Newcastle – ‘my word…’
Sean Longstaff is an “unsung hero” for Newcastle United this season as his “brilliant” form is going unnoticed.
That’s according to former Hibernian striker Tam McManus, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the midfielder’s performances.
Longstaff, 25, has featured in all of Newcastle’s 13 Premier League games this season, starting nine of them.
He and Joe Willock have battled for the third spot in a three-man midfield with Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton nailed-on starters under Eddie Howe.
McManus has been blown away the Longstaff’s athleticism and performances this season.
“My word Longstaff has an engine on him,” McManus told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.
“The way he gets about that midfield, he is absolutely everywhere. It is a key part of Howe’s style, isn’t it? Those players have to be so fit and I think Longstaff has embraced that.
“I don’t know what happened in pre-season but I suspect it involved a lot of running. He just seems to go all game and he is getting back to the form he had when he first came into the team a few years ago.
“Another example of how Eddie Howe can really improve these players. Longstaff was maybe one of the players who you thought might be replaced at some point but he is making a really strong case for himself.
“As a Geordie, I am sure the fans are delighted with that. I think he is a bit of an unsung hero to be honest because he has been brilliant when I have seen him this season.”

Longstaff started as Newcastle beat Aston Villa 4-0 on Saturday (29 October).
The Magpies are next in action against Southampton on Sunday (6 November).
