Pundit cites Ings in ‘brilliant’ Aston Villa transfer verdict as another ‘great’ signing completed

Aston Villa have pulled off the “best business” of the window after announcing the signing of Calum Chambers from Arsenal.

That is the view of former Leeds striker Noel Whelan who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, compared the 27-year-olds out-of-the-blue arrival to the signing of Danny Ings.

Villa confirmed Chambers’ capture on Thursday evening (27 January).

The Telegraph’s Sam Dean claims there is no transfer fee involved, with Chambers’ Arsenal contract expiring at the end of the season.

Whelan heralded Villa for managing to keep the move under wraps until the announcement.

He insisted it was more “great business” from the Midlands giants.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s great business again, isn’t it? We talk about how swiftly and how professional Aston Villa get their deals done. This is again another prime example.

“It’s Danny Ings all over again, isn’t it? A quality defender, loads of experience, coming from a top club at Arsenal to another team.

“Steven Gerrard has obviously highlighted him as a must and a need to add that experience at the back as well. Brilliant business done by Aston Villa.

“It’s cost them absolutely nothing, getting the quality of Chambers in there as well to add to the quality and players that they’ve already brought in in January.

“They’ve done the best business at the beginning of the season. They’ve done the best business in the middle of the season.”

Chambers only played five times for Arsenal this season before joining Villa.

He is the Villans’ fourth signing of the month.
